Let's Talk About Lighting: It's Not All About Golden Hour
When people think of dreamy, glowing photos, they often picture golden hour—the soft, warm light just after sunrise or before sunset. And yes, golden hour is beautiful (we love it too!). But here in the UK, where sunshine can be more of a pleasant surprise than a guarantee, we’ve learned to embrace all kinds of light—and trust us, cloudy skies are a photographer’s secret weapon.
Clouds Are Basically Nature’s "Softbox" (that huge umbrella-like thing photographers use)
A grey day might not feel glamorous, but it’s actually amazing for photos. Cloud cover diffuses the sunlight, softens shadows, and gives us beautifully even lighting that flatters everyone. Smooths out skin, erases wrinkles, puts sparkles in eyes. It also gives us a lot more flexibility with timing—midday, morning, even early afternoon sessions can work wonderfully when the clouds are out.
Weather Watching is Part of the Job
In the days leading up to your session, I’ll be checking the weather regularly. We’ll keep in touch if rain looks likely, and can adjust plans if needed—whether that means rescheduling, shifting the session time slightly, or picking a location with some covered options. The key here is flexibility, and I’ve done this enough to know how to roll with whatever the skies throw our way.
What If You Do Want That Golden Hour Glow?
We can absolutely plan around the light if you have a specific look in mind. Want that golden-hour magic? Let’s go for it. Prefer a brighter, cleaner style? Mid-morning on a dry day works great too. Whether you're after sunshine or you’re totally fine embracing the UK's moody skies, we’ll work together to find a time and setting that brings your vision to life.
The Bottom Line? Beautiful Photos Don’t Need Perfect Weather
Some of my favourite images have been taken on overcast days, in between sprinkles of rain, or during unconventional hours. The most important element in any session isn’t the sun—it’s you. Your connection, your story, your joy. Lighting is just the tool we use to capture that beautifully.
